Bertha Pauline Gurney (née Sommerfeld)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bertha Pauline Gurney on February 15, 2021. Bertha passed away peacefully, in her sleep, at Herb Bassett Home at the age of 92. Bertha was born May 5, 1928 in the Brightholme district near Shellbrook, SK, to Adolph and Anna Sommerfeld. Bertha was the oldest of three children. She grew up on the farm, attended Mount Teviot School, enjoyed her life growing up with family and friends in the area.
Bertha married Richard Gurney in October 1949, they then moved to Lacombe, Alberta, where they had three children, Carol, Rodney, and Janet. Four years later, they moved to Prince Albert, SK, where she spent the remainder of her life. While in PA, Richard and Bertha added one more child to their family, Rick.
Bertha was a kind, loving, generous, hard-working person always willing to help anyone she could. She was a long-time member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she served in many positions for over 60 years. Besides her church activity, she enjoyed bowling, water aerobics, volunteering at the Thrift shop, being a greeter at Walmart, as well as lunching with the ‘Sanitorium ladies’ and other friends. Over the years, Bertha has cooked for thousands. Between working at Kresge’s & Woolworth’s lunch counters, the Coronet & Marlboro hotels, the Voyager, Lowe’s at Waskesiu and retired after many years of cooking at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary. Many will remember her delicious cinnamon buns.
